News Transcripts

11/13/23

Good morning! It’s Monday, November 13th.

National hug a musician day.

Consensually! Consensually!

And now, the news.

Israel-Hamas War

-via NBC News and CBS News

We, of course, start with the Israel-Hamas war where, according to the Palestinian Health Ministry, the power at Gaza’s largest hospital has been out of service (their words – “out of order”) since Saturday, after heavy bombardment and fighting caused a power outage.

Over the weekend, thirteen patients, including three babies, died at the hospital.

Meanwhile, in France, more than 180,000 people took part in peaceful marches around France, including more than 100,000 in Paris, to protest the rising antisemitism in the war.

There are also a few stories about how negotiations are continuing to free the hostages that Hamas still has somewhere in Gaza, but no one is coming outright and talking about them, and so until that happens, I’m not going to be covering that.

VSU Shooting

-via CNN

A Virginia State University police office was critically wounded, and a suspect remains at-large as of this recording after a shooting near the VSU campus early Sunday morning.

The officer was responding to an on-campus disturbance just after 1:30am when they were shot. The suspect immediately ran off.

CA-10 is Down

-via KTLA

A local state of emergency was declared by California’s Governor Newsom after a fire early Saturday morning started in a storage yard before engulfing and destroying a part of the 10 freeway.

For those who don’t live here in Los Angeles – that’s a really vital freeway.

For those that do live here – that’s a freeway we try to avoid at all costs anyway.

Folks living in a large encampment under that area of the freeway are being housed.

Specifically, it’s the area between the east LA interchange and Alameda.

Speaker Introduces Stopgap Bill

-via The Hill

Called “extreme” by the White House, Speaker Johnson (literally hate saying that) has introduced a stopgap funding bill that the House is hoping to pass in order to keep the government open.

The bill does not include any aid for Israel, Ukraine, or the southern border. It also is unusual in it’s two-part funding - extending funding for some agencies and programs, such as veteran’s programs and agriculture and energy, until Jan. 19, with others, like Homeland Security, funded until Feb. 2.

Hey guess what? No one likes this bill. Well, some people probably do. But as I mentioned – the White House isn’t into it. Same with Democrats, duh, but also – Republicans like Chip Roy, who said his opposition “cannot be overstated.”

So… we’ll see what the week brings! (Besides chaos, of course.)

NWSL Final

-via ESPN

And because it was kind of a slow news weekend, let’s talk about sports (it’ll be quick, I promise). This weekend was the championship game for the National Women’s Soccer League, and truly you could not have scripted a better matchup (or a more heartbreaking game).

It was Seattle’s OL Reign, captained by Megan Rapinoe, versus NY/NJ’s Gotham FC, captained by Ali Krieger. Ali and Megan, first name basis for no reason, are both incredible atheletes in general and also huge in soccer. Also besties (or at least very good friends) and BOTH are retiring. So every game was like “Pino’s last game!” and then they’d win!

Pino’s OL Reign went all the way to the semifinals last year, while Gotham finished at the very bottom. This season they both went all the way to the championship.

And it’s all very exciting… until minute six, when Rapino slips on the grass, no contact, and knows, immediately, that this legend of the game – this boss on and off the pitch… is done.

In minute six, her career is over.

It was awful.

She cried. I could have cried (instead I just texted Zazz because – duh).

So then it was just… the game. And it was a great game. At the end, in stoppage time, Gotham was up 2-1, when the Gotham keeper was pulled for a handball as she tried to stop Rose Lavelle (because when Lavelle’s coming at you, dude – just try whatever you can). So the keeper was pulled!! And their midfielder had to go into the goal. And somehow, impossibly, the Gotham wall of players worked and Lavalle missed OL Reign’s last chance at an equalizer.

And just like that, Gotham FC were NWSL champions and it was nuts.

I just love sports.

And that’s it. That’s the news.

I’m proud of Megan Rapinoe and Ali Krieger. Both legends. Also Rose Lavelle – she’s a boss.

Also, musicians. And consensual hugs.

But more than that… because you’re a dang song… I’m proud of you.
