News Transcripts

11/08/23

Good morning! It’s Wednesday, November 8th.

National Cappuccino Day, which is always great – always great when a caffeine-focused day comes after an election day.

Fun fact, the difference between a cappuccino and a latte is that a cappuccino has distinctly separated layers of espresso and steamed milk, while in a latte the espresso and steamed milk are mixed together.

And now, the news.

SCOTUS Seems Ready to Protect Domestic Violence Survivors

-via AP News

The Supreme Court is back from its summer vacation where, we have to assume, some people had a super normal summer and others had probably a fairly unethical few months (classic). They’re back to work now and on Tuesday seemed to actually leaning towards a second amendment ruling that would preserve a federal law that prevents people under domestic violence restraining orders from having guns.

Frankly, it’s kind of surprising. The rare good surprise from the Supreme Court.

We’ll take it!

A ruling is expected this summer.

House Advances Tlaib Censure

-via CNN

On Tuesday, the House voted to move forward on the resolution to censure Michigan House Rep. Rashida Tlaib, the first Palestinian-American to serve in the House, because of her support of Palestinians, and criticism of Israel.

Last week, Marjorie Taylor Greene, who is a deeply unserious person who, herself, was censured and whose general vibe is just: “what can I do to make news and also, make sure people know I’m bad?”, last week she put up a move to censure Tlaib, which was blocked because it included calling the Palestinian protest at the Capitol an insurrection.

An insurrection is literally defined as, “a violent uprising against an authority or government.”

We saw an insurrection on January 6th. That was the thing Greene’s little buddies did.

A protest is a First Amendment right. Calling a protest an insurrection is dangerous. As dangerous as censuring a House rep just because you were censured and are looking for revenge anywhere you can get it.

Greene is a dangerous person. I want to make fun of her but I’m too mad, and I think I’m coming down with a cold, so I’m just annoyed.

Anyway, on Tuesday, House Rep Rich McCormick introduced a resolution to censure Tlaib after a Democratic-led attempt to block the resolution failed.

Tuesday night the House passed the resolution, censuring Tlaib. This is breaking news, and I will have more to say once my head doesn’t feel like it’s about to implode, mostly from a cold but also from how bad of a move this is.

We don’t have a budget, but uh sure – you can pass this.

Man Arrested Near Senate Offices

-via NBC News

A 21-year-old was arrested near Senate offices on Tuesday afternoon for, among other things, felony possession of a firearm – he was carrying a semi-automatic weapon.

It’s currently unclear why the man, who is from Atlanta and had a warrant out for a probation violation in Georgia, was in DC, but after being arrested in a park near Senate offices, US Capitol Police said there was no reason to believe there is an ongoing threat in the area.

Election Results

-via NY Times

And election results are still coming in as a record this, but I do have a couple big results to report…

In deep-red Kentucky, democratic Governor Andy Beshear has won re-election.

In Philadelphia, democrat Cherelle Parker will be the city’s 100th mayor, and 1st woman elected to that office.

Gabe Amo will be Rhode Island’s first Black congressional representative.

In New York, exonerated Central Park Five member Yusef Salaam, who was wrongfully arrested at age 15 and spent almost seven years in jail, won his New York City Council seat to represent Harlem.

Ohio became the seventh state to enshrine abortion rights in their state constitution while also becoming the 24th state to legalize adult recreational marijuana use.

And Democrats will keep their control of the Virginia Senate, preventing Glenn Youngkin from getting a trifecta of power in the state, which he has been very clear about wanting so he can make abortion completely illegal in the state.

The race for Mississippi’s governor is tight, and although it looks better for the democratic candidate than it did four years ago, it’s likely that incumbent Tate Reeves will win reelection (unless his democratic opponent, Brandon Presley, cousin of Elvis) is able to force a runoff. As of this recording, that’s unlikely.

What a night!

And that’s it. That’s the news.

I’m gonna just get ahead of this right now and say – I don’t know if there will be news tomorrow. I feel like I’m getting sick. If there is news, that’s a fun surprise, if not… I’m sleeping.

I’m proud of cappuccinos. And lattes. I’m a latte girl, myself. But honestly, caffeine in any form is nice.

But more than that, because hey… you’ve got the energy to 10,000 horses and I know that’s not a saying but maybe it should be? Whatever, the point is… I’m proud of you.
