News Transcripts

07/26/23

Good morning! It’s Wednesday, July 26th.

National Aunt and Uncle Day.

This is great. So first of all… I have some excellent aunts and uncles. Also GREAT aunts and uncles (see what I did there?). I am also an aunt and, it started as a joke but I take the responsibility very seriously – I am also Uncle Kim. Very important job.

Very important jobs all around.

And now, the news.

McCarthy Floats Biden Impeachment

-via AP News

In “Oh I can’t check? I can’t be curious? I’m an inquiring mind!” News…

House Speaker Kevin McCarthy says that unproven claim of financial misconduct suddenly, somehow, means the House may consider impeachment for Biden.

I want to be as clear as possible when I remind you that impeachment is very serious and rare. This is… unserious. It’s meant to be a punishment for impeaching Trump twice, once for a little international abuse of power when he withheld military aid for Ukraine because they wouldn’t investigate Biden and promote the idea that it was Ukraine, and not Russia, that interfered in the 2016 election.

To which Zelensky was like – my guy. The way you and your little problems are way not even close to being on my radar right now….

The second time he was impeached was uh… you know… the insurrection.

Anyway, because cult mentality’s gonna cult mentality, the Republicans want to impeach Biden now to show Dear Leader that they support him.

What McCarthy actually said is that, even though the House’s investigations into Biden haven’t proven any wrongdoing… an impeachment inquiry would help them get more info.

I hate all of this, because I don’t think it’s funny. I think it sets a dangerous precedent. But, if someone asked if I found any of it funny, it would be this… someone asked if he was under pressure from Trump to do this and Kev said “do I look like I’m under pressure?”

…. Yeah. Babe. Ya do.

This is such a waste of time and money. Remember this, remember how the Republicans wasted YOUR time and money for a guy who failed at selling steaks. And also did insurrection.

This isn’t a real serious thing. Mostly because Kevin McCarthy is wildly unserious. And I don’t even really love that I did this story because all these bing bongs wants is a headline. And I’m sorry I gave that to them.

But on the other hands… it’s funny to make fun of Kevin McCarthy. We bully the bullies, and we make fun of their feckless enablers.

Federal Judge Blocks Biden’s Asylum Policy

-via CNN

In other Biden news… A federal judge has blocked a Biden administration policy that disqualified most people from applying for asylum if they have crossed into the country without either securing an appointment at an official port of entry or proving that they sought legal protection in another country along the way.

Here’s what’s wild about where we are in politics… Republicans hate Biden because they… do? They decided? (Again, cult mentality’s gonna cult mentality.) But this ruling? Yeah it stems from an ACLU lawsuit. Democrats hate this policy as well.

The Department of Justice is expected to appeal.

Biden Designates National Monument

-via NPR

And in other other Biden news… on what would have been his 82nd birthday, President Biden signed a proclamation designating the a national monument to honor Emmett Till and his mother.

Emmett Till was just 14 years old when he was murdered while visiting family in Mississippi. It was during that trip that a white woman, Carolyn Bryant Donham (yeah, history will know her name as well) claimed that Till as making inappropriate advances towards her. Till kidnapped, beated, and shot by two white men (the woman’s husband and half-brother). An all-white jury aquited them and they never served any time… even after they admitted to the murder in a paid magazine interview.

They were PAID as they told the story of them murdering a 14-year-old.

And that woman, Carolyn Bryant Donham… later told a historian that she lied. Till had never touched her.

And then, after her 14-year-old son was beaten beyond recognition, for a crime he didn’t commit but was actually simply the crime of being Black in America, his mother asked for an open-casket. Refused to be silent. Made sure that America knew what they had done to her son.

100 days later, Rosa Parks refused to give up her seat on the bus which Rev. Jesse Jackson later said was done in part because she thought about Emmett Till and just couldn’t do it.

On the eight anniversary of his murder, Dr. King condemned "the evil of racial injustice” in his I Have a Dream speech.

And what deserved was to turn 82.

Maybe a statue for something completely different. For something he built or invented or discovered. Or maybe we’d never know his name because he’d lived a quiet and long life in Chicago.

But instead a white woman told a lie, and he was murdered by two adult men. And no one, except Emmett Till, saw consequences.

At the signing, Biden had this to say: "At a time when there are those who seek to ban books, bury history — we're making it clear, crystal crystal clear."

And that’s it. That’s the news.

I do this sometimes… there’s more news, but it’ll keep. I don’t want to move on past the story of Emmett Till. Because yesterday I told you the story about a a 23-year-old Black man who was attacked by a police dog AFTER he’d surrendered for literally no crime (barely a traffic misdemeanor). And no, the past doesn’t always repeat itself exactly. But it echoes.

And we’re gonna sit in the echo for a minute.

I’m proud of you.
