Good morning! It’s Wednesday, October 9th.
Emergency Nurses Day.
I was raised by an ER nurse, and so here’s what I want to say… nurses are heroes. Especially ER nurses. And if you were raised by one, you know that they are incredible.
And you also know… it is so hard to convince them you’re sick.
And now, the news.
Hurricane Melvin
-via AP News
Let’s start with Hurricane Melvin, which momentarily dropped down to a cat 4 storm, but is now back up to a 5, with sustained winds of 165 miles an hour. With more than 5 million people in the state ordered to find higher ground, this is now one of the largest evacuations in the state’s history and now, because of that, we’ve reached the point where people who want to leave… can’t.
Preparations in the state include cleaning up the debris that Hurricane Helene left, because things like street signs and tree branches could turn into projectiles.
This storm is so bad, so scary, this is literally brought a meteorologist to tears, on live television, as he watched it strengthen.
It is expected to make landfall in Florida this evening.
Supreme Court Rules on Lego Guns
-via NY Times
On Tuesday, the Supreme Court signaled that they are open to the Biden administration’s restrictions on homemade guns, aka ghost guns. Under the current restrictions, makers and sellers must be licensed, products must have a serial number, and buyers must pass a background check.
Feels like the literal bare minimum when it comes to buy a gun that can be built in under an hour but… what do I know?
We’ll what the inevitable ruling shows, but for a day in court that randomly spent a fair amount of time talking about omelets (starting with Historical Badman Justice Thomas comparing these guns to showing up with eggs, ham, and onions and calling it an omelet. That wouldn’t necessarily be an omelet because other things can be made with those ingredients, but a HelloFresh kit for an omelet is an omelet. The there was talk about buying those things are Trader Joe’s and honestly I’m bored even talking about this) but anyway… it does appear that the court is about to depart from its previous stance of – I don’t know, they’re gun. Let them do whatever they want!
Trump Crime Never Reelect That Guy Time
-via Washington Post, CNN, NBC News, and CNN
So much news broke right in the beginning on the day on Tuesday that now we have to spend the rest of the show talking about Trump, in this special edition of…
Trump Crime Never Reelect That Guy Time!
(Seriously, we absolutely can never reelect that guy, edition)
Starting with the fairly shocking, and completely abhorrent, news that, while America was still in the throws of covid, while people were dying, losing family members, losing jobs, losing friendships… while we were in the middle of a once-in-a-centennial pandemic and short of the testing we needed to help curb its spread, Donald Trump, as President of the United States… secretly sent tests to Vladimir Putin.
Both of them knew it was bad, and the way we know that… is because Putin told Trump: “I don’t want you to tell anybody because people will get mad at you, not me.”
Hey, let’s be mad at both!
In the book, Woodward also notes that Trump has spoken with Putin at least seven times since he left office.
Seven times!
Including one time where he asked an aide to leave before they spoke.
And it makes sense, right? Since leaving office, Trump has been supportive of Putin. Remember it was just back in February when, at a rally, Trump said he would tell Russia to do “whatever the hell they want” to NATO countries who don’t meet their spending guidelines on defense.
There’s also this story about the time that Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, also know as MBS,
And with all of that in mind, Bob Woodward forms the following conclusion about Trump: he is worse than Nixon.
“Trump was the most reckless and impulsive president in American history and is demonstrating the very same character as a presidential candidate in 2024.”
As headlines broke about what’s included in the book, another headline broke – despite promising otherwise, under Trump the FBI was not given the authority to fully investigate the claim that then-Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh had sexually assaulted Dr. Christine Blasey Ford. This includes not being given the authority to seek out other witnesses and, for the ten witnesses they were allowed to investigation, the White House outlines specific subject areas for questioning the witnesses, from which the FBI was not allowed to stray.
Let me say that again… Donald Trump prevented the FBI from fully investigating the extremely credible claim that Brett Kavanaugh sexually assaulted a women, simply because he wanted Kavanaugh on the court to strip rights from you and I while, at the same time, creating a specific set of rules that protect him from all of his crimes.
That alone should be disqualifying. But taken with the way that he led to an increase in covid cases and deaths in this country by taking some of the very few testing supplies we had at that time and sending them to Russia, but the fact that just last week, in an interview with Hugh Hewitt, Trump said people who migrate here to America have bad genes…
Not that he ever was, but it stands as fact more now than ever – Donald Trump is not fit to serve this country.
Let’s go win an election.
And that’s it. That’s the news.
There are 27 days until Election Day.

Let’s all go be voters!
I’m proud of emergency room nurses. And everyone who survived being raised by one.
Also it’s national pizza and beer day.
But more than pizza and beer, two things of the greatest things ever invented – because you are also one of the greatest things ever invented… I’m proud of you.
