News Transcripts

10/27/23

Good morning! It’s Friday, October 27th.

National American Beer Day.

Alright, I’m mean… if we must.

And now, the news.

Shooting in Maine

-via AP News and CNN

We’ll start with an update on the shooting in Maine, where the death count has changed and is now at 18. Yesterday I said 22 – that number came from NBC News but things were obviously very fluid. As of this recording, 18 has been the number all day.

Police are still looking for Robert Card, the person of interest in this shooting. To be clear – the term “person of interest” is being used because, since he has yet to be captured, they’re going by photos and car records. He is the suspect, and appears to be a lone shooter. However, the term “person of interest” is just… you know… for legal protection, just on the way off-chance they’re wrong.

About an hour before this recording, police went to his last known address, but although they found inside or near his home, it’s unclear what they found or whether he is there. If something changes before you hear this, you’ll hear a record scratch, but police did leave the house after surrounding it for a few hours.

Israel-Hamas War

-via NBC News

I haven’t talked about it in a couple days, but there is still a war happening in Gaza, between Israel and Hamas.

Israel has said it used tanks for conduct what they’re calling a “targeted” raid into northern Gaza, as “preparations for the next stages of combat."

Meanwhile, the United Nations is warning that Gazan hospitals are on the brink of closing, and humanitarian efforts may be forced to pause, due to the lack of fuel and food.

More than 7,000 people have been killed in Gaza, according to Palestinian health officials. And in Israel, Israeli Defense Forces say 1,400 people have been killed. That, on top of the more than 200 hostages that are still being held by Hamas in Gaza.

New York Republicans Forcing Vote to Expel Santos

-via NBC News

New York House Republicans have moved to force a vote to expel George Santos from Congress. A bummer of a couple days for Santos, which I’m fine with, because today he is also scheduled to be arraigned for his federal fraud case.

It will take a 2/3 vote in the House to give Santos the “byeeee” and the vote will need to take place within two legislative days.

That’ll be towards the end of next week because, after working hard doing nothing, the House is taking a long weekend. They’re back Wednesday.

Bowman Pleads Guilty

-via CNN

And how about another story about the House? Jamaal Bowman, a freshman New York Democrat, pled guilty on Thursday to a misdemeanor charge of pulling a fire alarm late last month. There was no fire. He says he was trying to get to a vote on time.

I’m not sure we know the whole story, but he at least admits he did it. His sentencing has been deferred for three months, during that time, he will be on probation, will need to pay a $1,000 fine, and write an apology letter to the Capital Police. If he does all that, and doesn’t break probation, prosecutors will drop those charges at his January 29th sentencing hearing.

Georgia Maps Struck Down

-via NY Times

Stop me if you’ve heard this before – Republicans have violated a civil rights law by drawing a congressional map that dilutes the power of Black voters, and a new map must be drawn.

This time the ruling came from Georgia, where Judge Jones wrote that the court “will not allow another election cycle on redistricting plans” that had been found to be unlawful. And Governor Kemp said – yeah. As mentioned multiple times, we won’t let people try and steal elections after the election. But before that? Yeah, before that, we’re very much on the side of trying to steal elections. Hello – I’ve been very clear about this.

No no, he didn’t say that. With words. Just… with his actions.

Kemp called a special session of the state’s General Assembly, which will start November 29th and give lawmakers 10 days to meet the Judge’s December 8th deadline.

And that’s it. That’s the news.

See why a beer day is good? It’s also global champagne day.

And if you don’t partake in either of those days, just do something nice for yourself. It’s been like 15 weeks in one, with these last two days in particular really exhausting all of us. So do something nice for yourself.

And because I know you will, and because you know you deserve it… I’m proud of you.
