Good morning! It’s Wednesday, May 31st. National Macaroon Day!
Not Macarons, which I’m not pronouncing correctly, I’m sure. Not Emmanuel Macaron. But macaroons.
Those are the ones with the coconut outside.
And now, the news.
Drone Attack on Moscow
-via NY Times
At least eight drones targeted Moscow on Tuesday morning, the first attack to hit civilian areas of Russia.
While all of the drones were intercepted, at least three buildings were damaged and two civilians were injured.
Russia, who has bombarded Ukraine’s capitol city Kyiv with at least 17 drone attacks this month, including Monday night’s attack that killed one person and injured thirteen others, called this a “terrorist attack.”
Meanwhile, also on Tuesday, US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken said he expected Sweden to join NATO in the weeks ahead.
Nova Scotia Fires
-via NPR
At least 16,000 people in Nova Scotia have been evacuated from their homes, as wildfires continue to burn across the Canadian province.
No injured or missing people have been reported, luckily, but officials believe more than 200 homes have been destroyed.
As of Tuesday afternoon, thirteen fires were burning in the area, with three still out of control.
Scary stuff. Stay safe Canada. You’ve got fun accents and some of my very favorite people are from there.
Iowa Building Update
-via The Independent
I’ve got an update on the apartment building that partially collapsed on Sunday.
Before demolition of the building could begin, police confirmed that five residents are missing, and two are believed to be in the building.
They previously claimed that there were no credible reports of missing people, and as preparations for the demolition began, protesters outside demanded that the demolition be delayed, while the search for residents continues.
Demolition plans are currently on hold, but the building remains incredibly unstable, with authorities saying another collapse is now imminent.
Rosalynn Carter Diagnosed with Dementia
-via Washington Post
Former First Lady Rosalynn Carter has been diagnosed with dementia. At 95, she is currently living at home with Former President Carter, who is 98 and still in hospice care.
95 and 98 years old… incredible.
Elizabeth Holmes Reports to Jail
-via CNN
Hey, remember that time that Elizabeth Holmes wanted just a little bit of your blood BUT YOU CAN’T ASK WHY?
Well she headed off the jail on Tuesday.
I have nothing more to add to this. I have no idea why other organizations gave her an opportunity for a rebrand. I have no idea why she named the company a combination of “thermos” and “thanos.” I have no idea why she was so heavily invested in turtlenecks for a while.
But she’s off to jail and your blood is safe… for now…
South Carolina Gas Station Shooting
-via AP News
Rick Chow, the owner of a South Carolina gas station who chased, then shot and killed a 14-year-old who, he believed, stole four bottles of water from him, made his first court appearance on Tuesday.
Chow believed the 14-year-old, Cyrus Carmack-Belton, stole the water. However, he’d put the bottles back on the shelf and was off the property when he was shot in the back.
Chow has been charged with murder.
And that’s it. That’s the news.
Probably a quiet day because everyone’s getting ready to watch the Ted Lasso finale. Season? Series? WHO KNOWS!
The debt ceiling bill is expected to be voted on today, so that’s something to be aware of. I guess I’ll talk about that tomorrow.
But listen… more than the debt ceiling bill (I don’t know the end of Ted Lasso yet, so I’m not prepared to make any comparisons… I’m also not ready to say goodbye. I’m just not ready for any of it!)… anyway, more than the debt ceiling bill… because you are not a group of actually real life elected people who don’t want to actually govern but instead want to make a bunch of PR statements about the thing preventing this country from falling off a financial cliff… and also before you’re great… I’m proud of you.
