Good morning! It’s Friday, June 2nd.
National donut day!
Donuts… it’s very clearly dessert, but in the mornin.
And now, the news.
Debt Ceiling Limit
-via NY Times
We start with the debt ceiling. As mentioned, today is June 2nd but, brace yourself, I’m recording this on the 1st. AND we are expected to hit our debt ceiling ceiling Monday the 5th.
The bill passed the House on Wednesday night and, as I record this on Thursday night, the vote is expected to happen any time now.
Here’s the deal… I’m recording this episode before the vote. Unless you hear a record scratch after this, then the Senate, as predicted, passed the bill and sent it back to Biden for a rush signature, preventing a financial catastrophy.
….
No record scratch? Okay we’re good! The bill now heads to Biden’s desk. I would imagine he will quickly sign.
Senate Votes to Overturn Student Loan Relief
-via NBC News
But it wasn’t all fun and games in the Senate today. Because before the vote to keep the country from financial ruin, they did take a few minutes to try and send student loan borrowers into financial ruin.
On a fairly party lines vote, the Senate voted to block Biden’s student loan relief program. You’ll never guess which people hopped on over and decided to vote with the Republicans.
That’s right! Our old pal Joey Manchy removed his captain’s hat for the quickest of moments and joined Kiki Sims (aka Kirstein Synema) and Montana’s Jon Tester to vote no on the bill.
Biden has already said he’ll veto the bill.
As it was always destined to do, the future of the student loan relief will, likely, ultimately be a SCOTUS ruling.
SCOTUS Stands with Unions
-via NPR
And speaking of the high Court… in an 8 to 1 ruling (EIGHT! To ONE!), the Supremes agreed against unionized truck drivers who walked off the job and left their trucks loaded with wet concrete, but it preserved the rights of workers to strike AND time that strike in a way that gives them then maximum effect.
But it was the newest Justice who won our hearts with her decent, arguing that, in fact, the drivers DID act lawfully in the timing of the strike.
Biden Trips but Is Fine
-via AP News
In, “this happens to me every day and no one makes a big deal about it” news… President Biden tripped at the Air Force Graduation. He was helped up and is fine.
Which explains why the 25th Amendment, which removes a president from office, was trending on Twitter.
He tripped over a sandbag that was holding the teleprompter up.
Arizona House Development Hits Pause
-via CNN
Arizona state lawmakers are hitting the pause button on already-begun housing construction in Phoenix because… well… because the state’s running out of water.
So uh… yeah… let that keep you up at night. Because it’s not like Arizona’s the only place that’s running out of water, ya know? Or that needs to build more housing, ya know?
Ga goy!
And that’s it. That’s the news.
There will be no news next week! A little bit because, you know, doth it is my birthday on Monday (Congress got me a new budget and probably student loans to pay again… very generous), but also because I’ll be busy working on the documentary.
The last time I said I was taking a week off, Trump got indicted on money crimes. I wonder…
Hey, I’m proud of donuts. Donuts are good. Baked goods are good. Let’s not pretend otherwise.
But more than that… more than a perfectly made cake donut (I like em a little more dense, ya know?), because you are also sweet, but NOT dense… I’m proud of you.
