07/11/23
Good morning! It’s Tuesday, July 11th.
National Free Slurpee Day! Which I always totally forget about. But yeah, if you go to 7/11 on 7/11, you get a free small slurpee. Not too bad!
And now, the news.
Larry Nassar Stabbed
-via ESPN
You ever read a headline oh just think: look at what karma does.
Larry Nassar, the horrific fraction of a human who, during his time as the US national women's gymnastics team doctor, sexually abused over 250 young female gymnasts, was stabbed multiple times over the weekend. He is in stable condition and will now be moved to another prison. This is the second time he’s been attacked after being released into gen pop.
Listen, if this is going to continue to happen, let me quote my favorite person to quote: Ashley Dylan Zazzarino and add this: “may he live long.”
Let’s Talk Weather
-via CNN and Independent
Listen, obviously you don’t come here for traffic and weather on the tens and twos, but I do need to spend some time talking weather again today.
First, we’ve got continued flash flooding and intense rain in New York. It’s really terrible rain and very wild because a lot of it is where I have some family and seeing the pictures of totally nuts. Pictures of high water and flash flooding where little middle school Kim, and her terrible haircuts, roam Main St. A Dunkin Donut in one hand, a slice of cheese pizza in the other. Just walking around, in between rewatched of Notting Hill and My Best Friend’s Wedding. I mean, really, besides the hair, this could be a story about me right now.
Vermont is also declaring a state of emergency as the rain continues in the area.
Meanwhile, the south, from Arizona to Florida, is seeing extreme heat that is expected to build throughout the week, with Phoenix expected to see temperatures as high as 118*.
It’s currently 91* as I’m recording this, and I’m miserable. 27* higher?! No, absolutely not.
So that’s the weather. Now to our eye in the sky for traffic!
NATO
-via CNN and Washington Post
Presidents Biden and Zelensky will meet at the NATO summit tomorrow.
Before I continue… be honest, a little part of you thought I do a little traffic bit, didn’t you?
Remember that over the weekend Biden said Ukraine should not be admitted into NATO until after the war, but Zelensky is still looking for a fruitful discussion with Biden. In an interview with BBC, he said, “It would be an important message to say that NATO is not afraid of Russia. Ukraine should get clear security guarantees while it is not in NATO. Only under these conditions, our meeting would be meaningful, otherwise it’s just another politics.”
Meanwhile, after a year of obstruction, the president of Turkey has agreed to support Sweden’s NATO bid. Right now this is just a shift in vibes, however if Turkey and Hungary both ratify, Sweden does get to join the club, bringing the entire Baltic Sea into NATO.
Search for Escaped Prisoner
-via WTAE
The search continues for the escaped inmate in Pennsylvania who climbed up on exercise equipment, climbed through a window, and scootched his boot down a rope made from jail bedding. After small stockpiles and camping supplies were found in the area, police now believe the suspect, who was jailed as suspect for murder and arson, may have some help in the area.
The US Marshalls are offering a $7,500 reward, with the US Crime Stoppers offering $2,000. Almost $10k to catch this guy!
James Lewis Has Died
-via PBS
James Lewis, the suspect in the 1983 Tylenol poisonings that killed seven people in the Chicago area, died on Monday. He was 76.
The murders changed the way food and medicines are packaged here in America, including the tamper proof packages. In other words – James Lewis is the reason you can’t open the Tylenol in your own house.
Katie Hobbs Makes the Pill Available OTC
-via AP News
Hey, you know what I didn’t tell you about last week… Katie Hobbs, the governor of Arizona, signed an order on Thursday to make contraceptive medicine, both hormonal and by pill, available over the counter.
Elections have consequences and, sometimes, they’re good ones!
And that’s it. That’s the news.
Once again, we’ve got ourselves a nice slow news day. We love to see it.
I’m proud of slurpees. It’s really hot and honestly, a slurpee sounds like maybe the best thing in the world right now.
But more than that… more than a combo stripped red cherry and blue raspberry slurpee with maybe a little dollop of coke on top, because you are also a perfect combination… I’m proud of you
