News Transcripts

08/29/24

Good morning! It’s Thursday, August 29th.

National Sports Day

(Don’t do three episodes in a row mentioning Ted Lasso. Don’t do three episodes in a row mentioning Ted Lasso. Don’t do three episodes in a row mentioning Ted Lasso.)

Hey, here’s something interesting about sports… Ted Lass—dang it!

And now, the news.

Israel in the West Bank

-via BBC and NY Times

Starting with the West Bank, where hundreds of Israeli troops, as well as drones and armored vehicles, have entered the West Bank, killing at least ten Palestinians.

This follows months of escalating raids in the area, which is occupied under Israeli military rule.

In all, more than 600 Palestinians have been killed in the West Bank since the October 7th attack.

SCOTUS v Student Loans

-via AP News

And over here in the states… on Wednesday the Supreme Court upheld a hold on President Biden’s plan to… just hook me up a little bit.

That’s right, it’s his student loan forgiveness plan and the Supremes are basically here just upholding the pause while the case makes its way through lower courts.

I know I plugged it yesterday but I do want to mention that the latest episode of Kim Moffat is a Fan has Kate Shaw, a genius when it comes to all things legal, talking about the student loan case right at the top of the show.

She doesn’t sound super optimistic that we’ll ever see loans being forgiven, but makes a great case as to why I, specifically, might be part of the problem.

Officer Charged

-via CBS News

On Wednesday, after beginning deliberations on Monday, a Las Vegas jury returned a guilty verdict for Robert Telles, a former Clark County Public Administrator who murdered reporter Jeff Gorman, after he wrote a series critical of Telles and his office.

For his part, Telles still maintains his innocence. On Friday he told jurors, “I’m not crazy.”

Which is… when you’re telling jurors that you’re not crazy, something has gone VERY wrong.

Telles has been sentenced to life in prison, with the possibility of parole after 20 years.

Trump Stuff

-via CNN and ABC News

And the finally, some Trump stuff…

Notice the lack of joy you hear in my voice.

It’s because this first story is not a great one. Very embarrassing as a country that this guy is a former president.

On Monday, Trump visited Arlington National Cemetery – our most hallowed ground where almost 400,000 soldiers are buried.

And there, on the sacred soil… Trump decided to do some campaigning.

So first of all… disgusting. Full stop. That’s abhorrent behavior.

It’s also illegal.

“Federal law prohibits political campaign or election-related activities within Army National Military Cemeteries, to include photographers, content creators or any other persons attending for purposes, or in direct support of a partisan political candidate’s campaign.”

Trump went there to draw attention to the chaotic withdrawal from Afghanistan three years ago. He went on the three year anniversary – he posted a video of himself there. He took a picture in front of a headstone, with the family of a fallen soldier – doing a thumbs up!

A thumbs up! In front of a headstone!

This fraction of a man faked his way out of anything resembling being of service to this country, he calls those that served suckers and losers, more on that in a minute, and then did a thumbs up in front of a headstone.

Disgusting.

Also, details are sparse, but it sounds like one of the people on Trump’s team was trying to take photos, and when someone from the cemetery stopped them, the campaign staff physically and verbally assaulted him.

At a cemetery.

For buried soldiers.

How anyone with any type of military background can brush this off is beyond me.

I’m disgusted.

And mad.

When I think about it, I’m flames on the side of my face mad.

So mad, in fact, that all I can do is make fun of him. But I can’t make fun of him for this because I don’t want to make it seem smaller than it is. It’s not something to be small.

But let’s make fun of him for something else!

Trump has added RFK Jr and Tusli Gabbard to his transition team.

Amazing.

Amazing!

What a group of absolute bozos. What a group of people I want nothing to do with.

Remember when Tulsi was like “I’m a democrat”… some people just say words, huh?

Anyway, good thing he won’t have a transition team. 68 days until the election.

Let’s go win this thing.

And that’s it. That’s the news.

I’m proud of… lots!

It’s also national lemon juice day – you know what they say about lemon. When someone gives you lemon juice day… make a gin and tonic.

But more than gin and tonics, if you can possibly believe it, because you are also an absolute dream… I’m proud of you.
